Last year, 403 DNB brought Calgarians a drum and bass massive like never before. Metropolis 2015 was an all DnB event spanning an entire weekend across multiple venues in the city. Taking on a very “Sled Island” vibe, Metropolis was aural perfection for the city’s DnB community. All drum and bass styles were represented by multiple crews – it was seriously viiiiibes!

Metropolis 2016 looks to be no different. The other day 403 DNB dropped this year’s stellar lineup, which has gotten us seriously excited for this year’s round of debauchery.

The hype started a few weeks ago when 403 announced the official Metropolis pre-party. Partnering up with Supreme Hustle, the pre-party alone is quality, and an excellent foreshadowing of what came to be on the Metropolis lineup. Gracing the decks this coming May long weekend to get us amped for Metropolis is an OG Metalheadz mainstay – Dillinja!Dillinja_2

“We think Dillinja is in line with Metropolis because he’s been involved in the DnB scene since the beginning,” says 403 DnB co-founder and resident DJ Curtis Wernham, aka Big Worm. “It’s a chance for the younger generation to see what it’s all about,” he goes on. “Sometimes you expect the older producers not to be on point on the decks as much as the younger guys, but last time Dillinja played he crushed it.”

Of course the pre-party will also include a Metropolis ticket giveaway, and considering the lineup that dropped this week, Dilliinja attendees will be lining up for the chance to win.

The main event will take place roughly one month after the pre-party this year, June 24 and June 25 2016. Last year, Friday’s headliners included Kasra and the Critical Sound gang, who have all gone on to do big tings in 2016. This year’s batch of Friday headliners are equally as huge, if not even more established than 2015’s Metropolis predecessors.

To say Total Science are legends of drum and bass is almost a fallacy to their accomplishments. Throughout the years, Total Science have been groundbreakers in the genre. They’ve influenced probably every single 90s era drum and bass artist, and still total-science-image-85smcontinue to push boundaries with their individual side projects as well as with Total Science. “Ever since the beginnings of my love for drum and bass, Total Science has always been a highly influential artist (group) for me,” says 403 DNB co-founder Tyler Duhaime, better known to many by his DJ alias DJ Obscene. “They were also one of the very first shows I had the opportunity to play/promote back in the early 2000s. Their diversity and affinity for cutting edge music has always kept them right at the front of my record crates. Even after over two decades they remain just as relevant to the genre as ever.” This YYC appearance will be part of Total Science’s 20 Years of CIA world tour, two decades and counting.

The second headliner of Friday night is Alix Perez. At the beginning of his career, Perez was best known for his soulful liquid jams. Since then, he’s run the gamut between many different sounds in DnB, from half time to future sounds. His 2013 Essential Mix still stands as a personal top five for this writer.

Kytami, another world-class talent is also on the bill for Friday. She’ll be performing her all drum and bass show with Phonik Ops. Having done a mini tour with Kytami, this is the segment of Friday that Big Worm is most excited for. “I’m really excited to show Kytami’s all drum and bass show to a room of all drum and bass heads,” he says. “Usually she has more of a mixed crowd in terms of her fan base, so she doesn’t get the chance to rinse to heads.”

Anyone that attended Metropolis last year can attest to the fact that the fun doesn’t stop Friday night. In fact, Saturday is incredibly rowdy. A daytime ragga jungle rinse followed by an all jump up lineup is more or less a recipe for rowdy behaviour.

This year, the ragga event will be taking place at the Oak Tree Tavern in Kensington, a new but promising space for this portion of festivities. 403 DNB will be taking over the entire venue including the parking lot, which will be closed to vehicles. “I’m excited to have the entire space for the afternoon,” says Wernham. “The fact that it’s so central on top of it is great,” he goes on to say. metropolis166Starting at 12 noon sharp, 403 locals, DJ Cain.1 from Banff and Dreadnought with Energizer MC from Edmonton will be blowing the roof off the place, curing hangovers with good vibes.

At eight o’clock, shuttle buses will be arriving to take attendees from Oak Tree over to Nite Owl for round two of nighttime action. Get ready jump up massive. Historically, 403 DNB events that take place over an entire weekend have always scheduled the jump up for Saturday nights. It gets absolutely crazy, seriously. Big Worm couldn’t agree more. “The Saturday night is always rowdy. We’ve been doing some form of this event for 4 years, and the Saturdays are always crazy.” With headliners Hoogs, Guv and MC Rhymestar crazy and rowdy are understatements. It’ll be difficult to top Mampi Swift’s performance from last year, but something tells me this combo will do it with ease.

Same as Friday, Nite Owl’s downstairs will also be popping off. The basement dwellers Saturday evening will be Noctilux Crew, running things underground with slower bpms and full on bass.

Saturday night doesn’t end when Nite Owl closes. Unbelievably the party continues. Calgary’s new after hours spot, Zon3 After Hours will be picking up where Nite Owl leaves off. Cotesy, a fan favourite from 403 DNB’s 2014 BBQ event will be coming over from London to headline into the wee hours. Partying into the night was one of the best things about the 403 DNBBQ, and one of the only things lacking from Metropolis, a sentiment Big Worm agrees with. “We’re excited to do a junglist takeover at this new space,” he says. “The all night aspect is something was missing from Metropolis last year. It ties it in as a whole.”

This is a huge lineup for a one weekend in city event. It speaks measures about the strength of the electronic music community, that we can play host to something of this calibre. At Freq Mag, we certainly can’t wait!
